Short History
El Antiguo Congreso Nacional es la primera sede que tuvo el Congreso de la Nación Argentina, inaugurada en 1864 por el Presidente Bartolomé Mitre y clausurada en 1905, cuando las sesiones se trasladaron al actual Palacio del Congreso.
The Old National Congress is the first seat of the Congress of the Argentine Nation, inaugurated in 1864 by President Bartolomé Mitre and closed in 1905, when the sessions were moved to the current Palace of Congress.
Se encontraba frente a la Plaza de Mayo, sobre la esquina de las actuales calles Balcarce e Hipólito Yrigoyen, formando una gran ochava, a metros de la Casa Rosada, sede del Poder Ejecutivo.
It was located in front of Plaza de Mayo, on the corner of the current Balcarce and Hipólito Yrigoyen streets, forming a large ochava, meters away from the Casa Rosada, seat of the Executive Power.
El edificio sobrevivió íntegro hasta 1942, cuando fue casi total- mente demolido para la construcción del nuevo Banco Hipotecario Nacional, hoy sede central de la AFIP, aunque la sala de sesiones se conservó intacta en el interior, y hoy es Monumento Histórico Nacional.
The building survived intact until 1942, when it was almost completely demolished for the construction of the new Banco Hipotecario Nacional, today the headquarters of the AFIP, although the meeting room was preserved intact inside, and today it is a National Historic Monument.
Gracias a la ley 12.826 del año 1942, el Archivo General de la Nación pasó a ser propietario de los tres edificios del Banco Hipotecario Nacional en la Avenida Alem. A modo de intercambio, el BHN pudo poseer el edificio del antiguo Congreso, para construir allí su nueva sede, que ocuparía una manzana entera y se terminó recién en 1966.
Thanks to Law 12.826 of 1942, the Archivo General de la Nación became the owner of the three buildings of the Banco Hipotecario Nacional on Alem Avenue. In exchange, the BHN was able to own the building of the old Congress, to build there its new headquarters, which would occupy an entire block and was completed only in 1966.

Interesting Fact
Ese mismo año, 1966, Poder Ejecutivo declaraba Monumento Histórico Nacional a la sala de sesiones del Antiguo Congreso.
That same year, 1966, the Executive Power declared the session room of the Old Congress a National Historic Monument.
Esto no salvó al edificio de su demolición, pero si a la pequeña sala, que tuvo que conservarse intacta en el interior de la estructura del nuevo edificio.
This did not save the building from demolition, but it did save the small room, which had to be preserved intact inside the structure of the new building.
