En pleno barrio de la Recoleta, una enorme flor metálica de más de 20 mts. de altura irrumpe en el paisaje.

In the heart of the Recoleta neighborhood, a huge metallic flower of more than 20 meters high bursts into the landscape.

Es la Floralis Genérica, una imponente escultura de acero inoxidable y aluminio que realizó y donó a la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, el prestigioso arquitecto argentino Eduardo Catalano.

It is the Floralis Genérica, an imposing sculpture of stainless steel and aluminum made and donated to the City of Buenos Aires by the prestigious Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano.

Además, es la primera de su tipo que tiene movimiento controlado por un sistema hidráulico y células fotoeléctricas que la convierte en una escultura que cambia de forma.

It is also the first of its kind to have movement controlled by a hydraulic system and photoelectric cells that turn it into a sculpture that changes shape.

Situada sobre un espejo de agua en el centro de la plaza Naciones Unidas, a metros de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), esta flor de dieciocho toneladas abre y cierra automáticamente sus pétalos según la hora del día.

Located on a mirror of water in the center of the United Nations Square, a few meters from the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), this eighteen-ton flower automatically opens and closes its petals according to the time of day.

A la noche se contrae y emana de su interior un resplandor rojo, hasta las ocho de la mañana del día siguiente, cuando vuelve a abrirse para recibir los primeros rayos de sol.

At night it contracts and emanates a red glow from inside, until eight o'clock in the morning the next day, when it opens again to receive the first rays of sunlight.

Sin embargo, si hay vientos fuertes se cierra nuevamente, emulando el proceso de fotonastia de la naturaleza.

However, if there are strong winds, it closes again, emulating nature's process of photonastia.

Catalano la definió como una “obra ambiental”.

Catalano defined it as an "environmental work".

El nombre, según indicó el creador, es un homenaje a todas las flores que existen.

The name, according to the creator, is a tribute to all the flowers that exist.

Su sueño era construir una estructura a gran escala que refleje el dinamismo de nuestro tiempo, por eso decidió sincronizar el movimiento con el avance de las horas y de las estaciones, además, el color metálico y el agua que la rodea le dan un brillo especial.

His dream was to build a large-scale structure that reflects the dynamism of our time, so he decided to synchronize the movement with the advance of the hours and the seasons, in addition, the metallic color and the water that surrounds it give it a special shine.

El arquitecto Catalano, que entre otras obras participó en la diagramación de Ciudad Universitaria y construyó una decena de edificios en los Estados Unidos, donde residió durante años -incluyendo la Casa Raleigh en Carolina del Norte-, realizó la flor en acero inoxidable, con esqueleto de aluminio y hormigón armado.

The architect Catalano, who among other works participated in the layout of Ciudad Universitaria and built a dozen buildings in the United States, where he lived for years -including the Raleigh House in North Carolina-, made the flower in stainless steel, with an aluminum skeleton and reinforced concrete.

La flor mira al cielo y a plena luz del día extiende seis pétalos. No obstante, años después de su inauguración, la escultura se dañó por una fuerte tempestad que rompió el mecanismo de apertura y cierre, dejándola abierta durante varios años. Hasta que por fin fue reparada por el Ingeniero Salvador Sorbello y posteriormente vuelta a inaugurar, el 10 de junio de 2015. Hoy ya es un ícono de la Ciudad y cita turística obligada.

The flower looks to the sky and in broad daylight spreads six petals. However, years after its inauguration, the sculpture was damaged by a strong storm that broke the opening and closing mechanism, leaving it open for several years. Until it was finally repaired by Engineer Salvador Sorbello and later re-inaugurated on June 10, 2015. Today it is already an icon of the City and a must-see tourist attraction.

Más allá de su movimiento diario, hay cuatro noches especiales en las que los pétalos permanecen abiertos: el 25 de mayo, para conmemorar el aniversario de la Revolución de Mayo; el 21 de septiembre, con la llegada de la primavera; y el 24 y 31 de diciembre, para ponerse a tono con las fiestas de navidad y fin de año respectivamente.

Beyond its daily movement, there are four special nights when the petals remain open: May 25, to commemorate the anniversary of the May Revolution; September 21, with the arrival of spring; and December 24 and 31, to get in tune with the Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations respectively.
