La obra es el resultado de un concurso internacional de anteproyectos, al que se presentaron más de 340 estudios de arquitectura de más de 20 países. Sus espacios combinan el alto valor patrimonial del edificio existente con la tecnología más moderna.

Las obras para recuperar la cúpula se hicieron en tiempo récord: 4 meses y medio. Originalmente el proyecto incluía toda una terraza mirador donde la cúpula era la protagonista revestida con vidrio y protegida con un sistema de parasoles móviles. Posteriormente hubo algunas objeciones debido a su valor patrimonial y la Dirección Nacional de Arquitectura entendió entonces que la restauración debía devolverle su aspecto original.

The work to recover the dome was done in record time: 4 and a half months. Originally, the project included an entire viewing terrace where the dome was the protagonist, covered with glass and protected with a system of movable sunshades. Subsequently there were some objections due to its heritage value and the National Directorate of Architecture then understood that the restoration should restore its original appearance.

El revestimiento de aluminio y vidrio se colocó sobre la misma estructura de hierro de la antigua cúpula. Se colocaron cristales con protección solar de capa blanda, de color gris oscuro. Con la luz del día, la elección del tono permite que las cuatro caras vidriadas se asemejen a la cubierta de pizarra que había antes y, de ese modo, propone una solución disputa sobre el conjunto por su valor patrimonial.

The aluminum and glass cladding was placed on the same iron structure as the old dome. Dark gray, soft-coated solar protection glazing was installed. In daylight, the choice of tone allows the four glazed faces to resemble the slate roof that was there before, thus proposing a solution to the dispute over the whole for its heritage value.

La cúpula fue armada con el sistema Geode MX como si fuera un techo inclinado, de trama vertical, con tapas verticales y junta de silicona con presores puntuales en los travesaños que evitan la deformación de los vidrios por acción del viento. La recuperación y evacuación de aguas de eventuales filtraciones se realiza a través de los canales que forman las ranuras de la estructura interna. La estanqueidad se completa con juntas EPDM y, en el lado externo, por una lámina de butilo sobre los montantes y travesaños.

The dome was assembled with the Geode MX system as if it were an inclined roof, with a vertical grid, vertical covers and silicone gasket with punctual pressures on the crossbeams that prevent the glass from deforming due to the wind. The recovery and evacuation of water from possible leaks is carried out through the channels that form the grooves of the internal structure. The watertightness is completed with EPDM gaskets and, on the external side, by a butyl sheet on the mullions and transoms.

Para realizar el montaje, a unos 60 metros de altura, se utilizaron los andamios que ya estaban armados para los trabajos de restauración de la fachada principal. Cada cara vidriada tiene 18 metros de altura y reproduce exactamente la forma original de la cúpula, incluidas las terminaciones en las aristas verticales y el perímetro superior. Por su parte, el techo a cuatro aguas del gran esqueleto se restauró a su versión original.

The scaffolding that had already been erected for the restoration work on the main façade was used for the assembly, at a height of about 60 m. Each glazed face is 18 m high. Each glazed face is 18 meters high and exactly reproduces the original shape of the dome, including the terminations on the vertical edges and the upper perimeter. For its part, the hipped roof of the great skeleton was restored to its original version.

Los mil metros cuadrados de vidrio cámara, de 32 mm en total, se fabricaron en Brasil durante el mes de enero. Llegaron a la obra con el tiempo justo, por lo que no se realizaron tareas de pre armado en el taller, como usualmente se hace. En este caso, las placas se montaron directamente sobre la estructura de aluminio para poder cumplir por el plazo de la entrega.

The 1,000 square meters of chamber glass, 32 mm in total, were manufactured in Brazil during the month of January. They arrived on site just in time, so no pre-assembly work was carried out in the workshop, as is usually done. In this case, the panels were assembled directly on the aluminum structure in order to meet the delivery deadline.
